Ecodudu is a waste-to-value company that leverages the black soldier fly to produce bio-fertilizer and insect protein for animal feed (mainly fish feed) manufacturers through a circular production model. The company provides a sustainable and highly nutritious alternative protein for Africa, contributing to the betterment of animals and consequently healthier people.
Ecodudu collects organic waste from food processing companies, fruit farms, brewers, and open-air markets around Nairobi. Through this bioconversion, the initial waste is decomposed by the insects, into organic fertilizer. The product, Shamba Mix, is sold to horticultural companies and agriproduct distributors.
At the same time, the separated matured “wet” larvae are sterilized, dried, and packaged into the protein product named Dudu Meal. Currently, Dudu Meal is sold to commercial feed manufacturers who use it for fish, poultry, and pig feed formulation.
Ecodudu solves two major problems and thus has a positive impact on both the environment and the communities in Kenya. First, Ecodudu provides a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to commonly used sources of proteins employed for animal feed e.g., soy and fishmeal. Second, Ecodudu offers quality and circular waste management services. Only about 30% of waste in Africa and 38% of waste in Kenya is collected due to population growth, costs of waste disposal, and the lack of necessary infrastructure.
The vision of Ecodudu is to empower farmers and communities both on the social and economic levels while solving environmental challenges that further contribute to deteriorating socio-economic conditions.
