Pietra di Scarto is a type B social cooperative founded in 1996 in Cerignola (FG), promoting sustainable farming practices and civic education to advance social and economic justice. From its founding it has operated within the framework of the solidarity economy and critical consumption, with the socio-professional inclusion of people in vulnerable situations as its central mission. A defining moment came in 2010, when it began managing a property confiscated from the Piarulli-Ferraro clan: a building surrounded by 5 hectares of land, transformed into the heart of its agricultural and productive activities.
The land supports olive groves, fruit trees, vegetables, grapevines and tomatoes, while the building has become an agri-food processing laboratory that completes the production chain. The product catalogue includes tomato-based products, olives, wine, preserved vegetables and jams, distributed mainly through direct sales and a B2B platform. The cooperative engages people from disadvantaged backgrounds in its activities, including individuals affected by disability, addiction, detention, domestic violence and migration.
Alongside its agricultural work, Pietra di Scarto runs educational projects for young people in the local area on the themes of legality, agrobiodiversity and critical consumption, spanning from primary schools to universities.
The support from Restart Italia is directed at backing the cooperative’s commercial and production development plan, with the aim of opening new distribution channels and improving operational efficiency.
