Lazzarelle is a type B social cooperative established in 2010 with the aim of fostering the social and professional reintegration of women inmates at the Pozzuoli Prison in the province of Naples.
Using diversity management methodology and a learning-on-the-job approach, Lazzarelle created the first all-female example of coffee roasting inside an Italian prison; since then it has trained and regularly employed more than 70 women, drastically reducing the recidivism rate by 90 percent.
The cooperative is engaged in paths of empowerment and orientation for women in prison, aimed at helping them regain confidence and esteem in their own abilities and knowledge.
In this way, Lazzarelle also acts on the front lines to combat gender-based violence in all its forms, not least economic violence, by providing opportunities for personal and professional growth for women in prison and victims of violence, along with the means to self-determine their lives and be protagonists of change.
Restart Italia’s support is directed toward fostering the development of a new production line: chocolate. The new production line will be realized through the establishment of a chocolate production workshop in prison. For distribution and sale, it will be possible to count on the visibility linked to the activity that Lazzarelle already has in place through different channels and its own bistro. The new products will position themselves in the market as another symbol of social redemption of individuals at risk of marginalization, providing opportunities for inclusion for more women inmates.
