Bottle Logistics East Africa addresses the glass waste management challenge by creating a lean and efficient recovery model for industrial and post-consumer glass waste. The company serves beverage companies in Kenya and glass manufacturers across East Africa by cleaning reusable bottles for brand owners and processing collected glass waste into refined cullet or glass aggregate.
In Kenya, glass waste is estimated to reach approximately 204,000 MT annually, with only 30% currently being recovered for recycling and reuse. This low recovery rate is primarily due to inadequate waste segregation at the source, limited incentives and public awareness, multiple middlemen in the value chain, and the absence of formal waste management systems.
To improve recovery rates, Bottle Logistics has formed partnerships along the value chain, with companies and individual waste collectors that gather waste glass from residential households, businesses, and restaurants, while the informal collectors retrieve waste glass from landfills.
By recycling glass, the company reduces CO2 emissions and preserves virgin raw materials like sand, limestone, and soda ash which are essential for new glass production.
