Cooperativa San Rocco was founded in 2021 in Ligonchio, within the municipality of Ventasso (Reggio Emilia), in the high ridge of the Apennines. According to its members, the cooperative was established with the aim of becoming a key player in territorial development, marking a shift from a “temporarily occupied” area to a “lived-in” territory.
The choice of the name “San Rocco” is a tribute to the history of solidarity within the Ligonchio community. The discovery of the statute of a mutual aid society dating back to the early 1900s, also named San Rocco, rekindled a deep connection among the residents. They decided to retain the name to honor the resilience of their ancestors, who maintained mutual support despite geographical distances.
San Rocco was thus created with the mission of being a repository of the identity, culture, and knowledge accumulated over time, aiming to preserve a “place consciousness” of the territory.
The cooperative, which began its activities in 2023, primarily manages the Rifugio dell’Aquila, a facility that includes 14 independent chalets and spans approximately 30,000 square meters of woodland, buildings, services, and gardens. The refuge offers a total of 183 beds and can host up to 250 people in its restaurant.
