Need
Rural farm waste is an under-utilized resource that can be transformed into clean energy and result in improved farm management and economics. In Kenya alone, small farm production accounts for 75% of all food marketed and consumed in the country. The resulting livestock waste typically generates significant greenhouse gases and, combined with poor farm management, leads to water contamination, vermin and disease risk.
Solution
Sistema Bio provides integrated biogas solutions to rural farmers to transform livestock waste into usable clean energy and a nutrient-rich fertilizer, with resultant savings in cooking and fertilizer costs. Sistema’s biogas systems come complete with a biogas unit, piping and 2-burner stove which once installed, can immediately replace the need to use charcoal or wood burning fires. Sistema’s biogas solution comes in 10 sizes, suitable for small family farms to small commercial operations. Sistema is now offering productive technology for larger systems, including biogas industrial water heaters, biogas space heaters and biogas generators.
Impact
Sistema began operations in Mexico in 2010 and has expanded to Colombia, Kenya and India. It has sold over 4,000 biodigesters that have effectively reduced CO2 emissions by over 85,000 tons. Sistema’s small farm clients cooking on clean bio gas save, on average, $400 USD per year from avoided cooking fuel and fertilizer costs.
