Need
Over 85% of Tanzania’s 55 million population suffer from energy poverty, whose consequences include reduced opportunity for income generation and poor quality of life. Lack of energy access at home means no access to light, heat or power other than by candle, kerosene or battery. Mobile phones cannot be charged, requiring time-consuming trips to neighbouring villages to buy charging services. In the absence of reliable lighting, income generating activities cannot continue after nightfall.
Solution
Devergy is an energy services company that provides solar and smart micro-grid energy to low-income people in off-grid rural villages. The system establishes small micro-grids that run on adaptive capacity and are monitored 24 hours a day, so whenever there is a need to supply more energy they can expand the grid in the exact location where it is needed.
Impact
Devergy’s careful tracking of customer usage patterns has resulted in 99.83% service level of grids and minimal technical downtime. Devergy is looking to scale up and replicate its mini-grid experience with other partners beyond Tanzania.
